Bringing Sexy Back – Why the database marketplace is changing quickly After several decades of standardization and commoditization, the database marketplace is now rapidly transforming due to disruptive forces in both technology and business. New entrants have emerged recently that are challenging conventional wisdom on the role of a database in an organization. Companies everywhere are re-allocating resource and money toward the database layer as a means of harnessing this change for competitive advantage. This presentation will focus on key trends that that are driving this change in the landscape and what it means for business.

Michael Bain:Michael Bain Global Database Director, Go-to-market Innovation, SAP. Michael has been involved in the Database marketplace for more than 20 years. In his current role, he is responsible for driving new go-to-market models for SAP’s database business. SAP as a company has set its sight on being the #2 database provider by 2015. Michael joined SAP in a sales leadership role and was responsible for the first global sale of SAP’s flagship HANA database. Prior to that, Michael worked for IBM for 15 years in a variety of sales and sales leadership roles, and led the sale of the one of the largest DB2 based data warehouses in North America. Michael started his career with Information Builders in Vancouver. Michael has a Bachelor of Mathematics degree from the University of Waterloo and is a former Board member for the BC Technology Industry Association. Making the most of your data through predictive analytics & data mining SAS Logo The ability to make effective, fact-based decisions is not based on data quantity. Most organizations are awash in data – too much of it, in many cases. Rather, success is based on an organization’s ability to discover more meaningful and predictive insights from the data it already has. In this presentation Tara Holland from SAS and Ella Young from Vancouver Coastal Health Authority will describe and show examples of how Predictive Analytics and Data Mining can reveal new insights out of existing data to improve business performance. The presentation will focus on how organizations can:

Biographies of Co-Presenters Tara Holland, SAS Canada Tara HollandTara Holland is the manager of the Public Sector Solutions Team for SAS Canada. She leads a team that provides technical support and business guidance to Federal, Provincial and Healthcare customers across the country. Based in Ottawa, Tara has been with SAS for 15 years supporting the Analytic and Business Intelligence solutions. Her passion is in brdging the gap between Business and IT and enabling organiztions to deliver on the value of SAS Business Analytics using concepts such as Competency Centres. Prior to joinign SAS, Tara led the Data Mining team at Revenue Canada and lived the real-life challenges faced by organizations wanting to be more data driven. She also held positions in IT management, application architecture and business analysis at Revenue Canada, Saskatchewan Economic Development and Statistics Canada.

Ella Young, Vancouver Coastal Health Authority Ella YoungElla Young recently (January 2, 2013) joined Vancouver Coastal Health Authority as their Director, Care Continuum and Actuarial Analytics. Ella joined VCH to continue work she had been lauded for during her time as the Director, Actuarial and Risk Analytics with the BC Ministry of Health (MOH). At MOH Ella was responsible for building predictive models focused on chronic diseases, informing health sector decision making and providing leadership in modeling and data access. One example was a highly accurate predictive model for citizens of high-risk of becoming Heart Failure incident so resources may be focused the ‘triple aim’ of individual and population health improvement, positive patient experience and best use of system resources. Prior to her time at MOH, Ella held a number of senior-level roles with HEABC, CHSPR at UBC, PHC, the Provincial Blood Coordinating Office, etc. In addition, she has held senior positions in the energy and insurance industries including Risk Manager for Worksafe BC where she built and implemented predictive models that highly accurately identified likely future high-risk claims, and Western Region
